Avoid using clichés or overused phrases that can make your writing seem Generic or uninspired.

Clichés can kill your writing by making it seem generic and uninspired. Here are some tips on how to avoid using them:

1) Write in specific detail – rather than generalities, be as specific as possible when you write. The more concrete and sensory details you can provide, the better. This will make your writing more original and exciting to read.

2) Use active voice – instead of passive voice, use active voice in your writing. This will make it more forceful and direct, helping you to avoid sounding like everyone else.

3) Use metaphors and similes – rather than using literal descriptions, use metaphors and similes to add color to your writing. This will make it more engaging and interesting.

4) Replace adverbs with stronger verbs – rather than using an adverb to describe the action in a sentence, replace it with a stronger verb. This will help you to avoid boring your reader with clichés.

5) Avoid vagueness – vague writing is a big clichés killer.

6) Use Active Voice is the most effective way to write in the English language.

7) When you write in the passive voice, your writing is weak, passive, and less interesting. Active voice helps engage the reader. For example, “The dog was chased by the cat” is much more powerful than the passive voice version, “The dog was chased by the cat.”

  1. Thanks for sharing these practical tips to not only improve writing but also make writing more interesting.

I know that my writing is far from perfect because, first of all, I am not a native English speaker. Although I’ve been blogging for almost 5 years now, there are still times when I get frustrated because I feel that something is lacking. I do proofread my work before publishing and even spend more time doing this than writing. By the way, I also installed the free version of Grammarly and considering upgrading. Do you recommend I upgrade?

I also learned that it is always better to use the active voice rather than the passive one, and I try to avoid long sentences. However, I noticed that many bloggers use more than 20 words in a sentence, but their posts are still ranking high on search engines. Do you think the length of sentences affects your ranking?

    1. Hello Alice, Thanks for stopping by! To answer your questions,  I would recommend that you upgrade to the paid version of Grammarly. Grammarly provides an enhanced version of their software which offers more advanced checks for grammar, spelling, and punctuation. The paid version also includes a plagiarism checker, which can help to ensure that your content is original. Additionally, Grammarly’s real-time feedback can help you to improve your writing and get your posts ranking higher.
Regarding the length of sentences, it is important to remember that search engine algorithms look for content that is well-written and engaging. Longer sentences can be more interesting and add more depth to your writing, but it is important to ensure that they are clear and concise. As long as your work is well-written and grammatically correct, the length of your sentences should not have an impact on your ranking.

  2. Hi Kevin, Thank you, first of all, for the great information. Every writer needs to read this. I am a little confused by the passive voice vs. the active voice. Can you explain again, as I think I do not understand? I can use tone to create an active voice, but how do I put that into writing? I definitely, would like my writing to be more interesting!

    1. Hello Kathleen, I hope I can explain it in more detail. The active voice is when the subject of the sentence acts as the verb. For example, “I wrote the report.” In this sentence, the subject (I) is acting (wrote).
The passive voice is when the verb acts upon the sentence’s subject. For example, “The report was written by me.” In this sentence, the subject (the report) is being acted upon (written).
To create an active voice in your writing, make sure that the subject of the sentence is performing the action of the verb. This will help to make your writing more direct and engaging.

      Thanks for stopping by!
